Resident Evil 4's 95.85% critical acclaim score has been verified by the review aggregator website and sits above Grand Theft Auto III and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of liberty which are ranked second and third respectively.

Resident Evil 4 was originally part of the Capcom Five which were five GameCube exclusives to be released by the developer with the goal of boosting hardware sales and showing off third-party developer support. The games were: P.N.03, a futuristic third-person shooter; Viewtiful Joe, a side-scrolling action-platformer; Dead Phoenix, a shoot 'em up; Killer7, an action-adventure game with first-person shooter elements and the now classic, survival horror third-person shooter, Resident Evil 4.

In response to pressure from users and shareholders, two months before the game's January 2005 release, Capcom revealed that a PlayStation 2 port would be published nine months after the GameCube version.
