Two Alberta, Canada natives have found a non-traditional way to use a golf club.

Matthew Godfrey and Darcy Bennett achieved the farthest distance to hit a marshmallow into the mouth with a golf club, after sending it flying 29.89 m (98 ft) on 6 June.

Although Matthew has loved golf for most of his life, he had never attempted to hit a marshmallow with a golf club until he and Darcy decided to attempt the record.

“Darcy approached me with the idea, and I was all in,” said Matthew.

I knew that he already held other Guinness World Records titles, and I felt honoured and excited to help capture another record!

Darcy says when he first applied for the record, he needed to find a partner to do it with.

“Matthew is a golfer extraordinaire, so I was positive that he needed to be my teammate, and he did not disappoint,” said Darcy.

“He quickly agreed to do the attempt with me as dreams of Guinness World Records glory danced in our heads!”

Matthew says after he learned about the record title, he bought a bag of marshmallows and went out to his backyard.

It took a little time to dial in a club that would provide the right distance, and still enough loft for Darcy to get underneath it and catch it.

After a session in his backyard, he felt confident they could achieve the record, which required a minimum of 25 m (82 ft).

On the day of the record attempt, the duo and their families gathered around Matthew’s backyard.

“Everyone was out there trying to catch these marshmallows,” said Darcy.

“It was a ton of fun.”

Matthew says he felt nervous to perform, especially with their families and friends watching.

He expressed to his wife that he never considered that his most pressure-packed golf swing would be hitting a marshmallow.

After striking a few marshmallows, Matthew knew it was only a matter of time until he and Darcy connected on the record-breaking distance.

“It was a beautiful Alberta summer evening,” he said.

Darcy made sure they had all they needed for the record attempt: fresh marshmallows, the correct golf club, and a measuring tape.

The team marked the spot they had to surpass, and Matthew took his first shot.

“Bang! A marshmallow ricocheted off my front tooth and out of my mouth and a loud disappointing ‘ohhhh’ from our cheering section,” said Darcy.

“But I would not let that one miss deter my confidence.”

Matthew took another shot.

“A few minutes after that glorious debacle of a miss, another beauty shot was coming my way,” said Darcy.

“Everything happened so fast, yet so slow.”

In an instant, Matthew and Darcy crushed the record by 4.89 m (16 ft), impressing everyone around them.

“We achieved the unthinkable of breaking a Guinness World Records title,” he said.

Our family treated us like rock stars and after signing several autographs, we dispersed the crowd and went back to normal life.

Matthew says the most difficult part of attempting the feat was making solid contact with the marshmallow to allow for proper flight and distance, without swinging too hard and exploding the marshmallow into smithereens.

“Certain clubs or certain speeds would just blow the marshmallow up,” he said.

“We had to tinker with the correct club and swing speed to achieve the proper distance and height to pull this off.”

Darcy also learned a valuable lesson.

“I did learn that stale old marshmallows were bad to catch in my mouth,” he said.

“They can hit your teeth pretty hard. It was like catching rocks!”

However, achieving the record title was extremely gratifying for the duo.

Matthew says he grew up reading Guinness World Records and always enjoyed seeing the amazing things that people could accomplish.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to break a Guinness World Records title in my lifetime,” he said.

When we learned we had broken the record, I was delighted.

Matthew encourages those wanting to attempt a similar record title to “just go for it.”

He says it’s important to find something that interests you and try your best to break the record.

Although Matthew doesn’t hold any additional record titles, he says they would definitely attempt to reclaim their record if or when the mark is broken.

Darcy, on the other hand, holds two additional record titles:

  • Farthest distance to blow a playing card – 3.79 m (12 ft 9 in)
  • Most tennis balls caught behind the back in one minute (team of two) – 25 total with Bryant Hurst (Canada)

He says he has learned that Guinness World Records isn’t just for the insanely talented.

“You think of amazing people with amazing talents, you typically don’t think about average Joes like me and Matt,” said Darcy.

“It just goes to show that even normal people with normal lives can be Officially Amazing, too!”

Matthew also offers the following advice:

When life gives you a marshmallow, smash it with a golf club into your buddy’s mouth.
