Ventspils City Council in Latvia wanted to host an event that would engage and excite the local community ahead of the upcoming 100 year anniversary of Latvian independence.

They decided to raise the scale of their city’s annual snowdrop planting event and attempt to break the Guinness World Records title for the Most people planting flower bulbs simultaneously.

Participants planting flowers
Ventspils residents showed up in their hundreds and smashed the previous number of 850 with a huge new total of 1,293 people.

Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Pravin Patel flew out to count and verify the challenge, ensuring that each participant planted at least five bulbs.

Women planting flowers
A number of local VIPs took part in the attempt, including Latvian Olympic javelin thrower Dainis Kūla.

This is not the first time the Latvian city has entered the record books, as they created the Longest carpet of flowers back in 2010 (although this record has since been broken).
