Guinness World Records Day 2016: A look back at 24 hours of record-breaking action

Yesterday marked the twelfth annual Guinness World Records Day, a global occasion which sees thousands of people around the world come together to celebrate all things superlative.
 
Here we round up some of the biggest moments from the day...
 

Shortest married couple

Measuring a verified combined height of just 181.41 cm (71.42 in), the incredible Paulo Gabriel da Silva Barros and Katyucia Lie Hoshino, both of Brazil, officially became our new title holders for shortest married couple after tying the knot back in September.
 
They visited the Guinness World Records London headquarters to take part in a fun “MR & Mrs” style quiz.

In Melbourne, Australia, fitness guru and Instagram star Kayla Itsines lead thousands of people in no less than five record attempts as she puts together a fitness class on a grand scale.
 
They achieved: Most people performing squats, Most people star jumping, Most people performing lunges, Most people performing push-ups and Most people performing burpees.

Most rings placed on a target by a parrot in one minute

 
Over in the US, an exceptionally talented Macaw parrot called Skipper became the first animal to set a record on Guinness World Records Day 2016.

No strangers to setting new records on GWR Day, illustrious exhibition basketball team, the Harlem Globetrotters returned to smash nine records for this year's celebrations including Longest basketball hook shot, Most basketball slam dunks in one minute (individual) and Most three pointers made by a pair in one minute.

Most traffic cones balanced on the chin

 
In Tokyo, Japan, Keisuke Yokota broke his own record with an impressive 26 cones.

Most double Dutch-style skips in 30 seconds

 
Another record was set in Japan when double Dutch team Diana of Torida proved they have the fastest feet in the East, achieving a mind-boggling 129 skips in half a minute.

Largest lightbulb display in an indoor venue

 
Universal Studios Singapore in Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore marked the occasion by unveiling a breath-taking display consisting of 824,961 individual bulbs.
 
The exhibition is part of the attraction’s Universal Journey – a spectacular experience created for the Christmas season which gives visitors the opportunity to adventure through eight differently-themed zones.

Largest display of origami elephants

 
A spectacular ensemble of colourful elephants were yesterday displayed at the renowned Bronx Zoo in Manhattan as part of celebrations for GWR Day 2016. 
 
The astonishing presentation of 78,564 paper animals were made by participants from around the world and put together by the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Largest collection of model cars

 
Guinness World Records adjudicator Samer Khallouf flew out to Lebanon to recount Nabil “Billy” Karam’s record breaking collection of 37,777 model cars and 577 dioramas.

Most chest to ground burpees in one hour (female)

 
Over in our Dubai office, Australian serial fitness record breaker Eva Clarke added to her title tally by setting the record for most chest to ground burpees in 60 mins with a total of 920.

Most flowers picked up with the mouth in a contortion backbend in one minute

 
Finally, the super flexible Liu Teng put China in the record books after she managed to pick up an impressive 15 flowers by doing a contortion backbend in one minute. The attempt took place in Yongcheng, Henan.
