When Dr. Leila Denmark (1 February 1898–1 April 2012) of Portal, Georgia, USA, retired in May 2001, aged 103, she was the oldest practicing physician ever. She died on 1 April 2012 at the age of 114. Having reached 114 years old, Dr Denmark is the oldest person to have held the title of “Doctor" (she specialized as a paediatrician). She was the fourth-oldest living person in the world. One of her secrets to longevity was a diet low in sugar – she refused a piece of her 100th birthday cake because of its sugar content.
