African hunting dogs – also called Cape hunting dogs, African painted dogs/painted wolves or hyena dogs (Lycaon pictus) – are successful in 50–85% of their hunts, consistently the highest figure in the mammalian world. This high hit rate is crucial because many of their kills are stolen by larger predators such as lions and hyenas with which they share their territory of sub-Saharan Africa.
By comparison, lions only have a success rate while hunting of around 20–30%, while spotted hyenas are successful in approximately 25–35% of their hunts.
