Tail-ender Jasprit Bumrah (India) plundered 29 runs off one Test match over when batting against England paceman Stuart Broad in the delayed Fifth Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham, West Midlands, UK, on 2 July 2022.
Stand-in captain Bumrah’s astonishing sequence of 4-6-4-4-4-6-1 off the bat – from an eight-ball over also featuring five wides and a no-ball – took him one run ahead of both Brian Lara, who had previously smashed 28 runs off a single over for the West Indies against South Africa (bowler: Robin Peterson) on 14 December 2003, and George Bailey, whose 28-run over for Australia against England (bowler: James Anderson) occurred on 16 December 2013.
The 35 runs conceded by Broad and England in the 84th over of India’s first innings also took the record for the most runs scored by a team in a Test match off one over (male), jointly held by Lara’s West Indies in 2003, Bailey’s Australia in 2013 and South Africa on 20 January 2020, when Keshav Maharaj hit England’s Joe Root for 24 runs off the bat from the first five deliveries before the sixth ball deceived both the batsman and the wicket-keeper and went to the boundary for four byes.
In “chaotic, comedic and downright daft scenes” at Edgbaston on the second morning of the Fifth Test, Bumrah (Test average: 6) went from 0 not out from 7 balls to 29 not out from 14 balls, against a bowler in Broad who had pouched his 550th Test wicket just two overs earlier (England’s 80th of the innings).
