Dr Eugene Shoemaker (USA) (1928-97) was one of the most eminent geologists of the century. Best known for his work on extraterrestrial impacts, he discovered 1,125 asteroids, many in partnership with his wife, Carolyn.
Famously discovered the comet Shoemaker-Levy, which impacted with Jupiter in July 1994
