Although Margrethe II of Denmark and Beatrix of the Netherlands are both still alive, as of 19 November 2024, both abdicated as Queen (Beatrix on 30 April 2013; Margrethe on 14 January 2024). This means that, for the first time in more than 200 years, there are no living queens regnant.

Of the two living, female former sovereigns, the longest reign was that of Margrethe (b. 16 April 1940); she ascended the throne of Denmark on 14 January 1972 upon the death of her father Frederick IX and remained in place for exactly 52 years before stepping aside for her son to rule as Frederik X. Margrethe II was also the most recent queen regnant. Beatrix reigned for exactly 33 years between 30 April 1980 and her resignation on 30 April 2013.

The longest-reigning queen ever was the UK's Elizabeth II, who was sovereign for 70 years 214 days between 6 February 1952 and 8 September 2022.
