Of the two double landlocked countries in the world, Uzbekistan is the largest, with a population of 27.8 million and an area of 447,400 km2. Uzbekistan is surrounded by Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Uzbekistan became double landlocked in 1918 as it ceased to be part of the Russian empire

The other – and therefore smallest – double landlocked country is Liechtenstein, with an area of 160 km2 (61.8 square miles) and (as of July 2017) a population of 38,547; it is enclosed by Austria and Switzerland.
