The largest coin with legal tender status is the $1 million-coin of Australia. It weighs 1,012 kg (2,231 lb 1.24 oz), measures 80 cm (31.5 in) in diameter, 13 cm (5.12 in) in thickness, and is made from bullion with a purity of 99.99 per cent. The legal-tender coin was introduced on 9 February 2012 by the Perth Mint (Australia), with a face value of AUS$1 million (US$667,170; £525,620). It's intrinsic value in 2023, however, is about AUS$99.6 million (US$66.5 million; £52.4 million)

The coin, called the "1 Tonne Australian Kangaroo" features a Kangaroo and was created to promote Australia Gold Nugget, often referred to as the Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coin series, first struck in 1986. Despite their legal tender status, the intrinsic value of all of these coins exceed their declared value, meaning that they will likely never actually circulate as money.
