Rogue or freak waves are waves with abnormal height compared to other waves and were long believed to be legendary. On 1 January 1995 the first confirmed measurement of this phenomenon occurred as a massive wave with a maximum height of 25.6 m (84 ft) struck the Draupner platform in the North Sea.
