Chebet smashed the women’s 10,000 m world record in Oregon, becoming the first female athlete to break 29 minutes for the event. The race, which doubled as a trial for the Kenyan Olympic team, had originally been set up a world record attempt for Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, who finished second behind Chebet in 29 minutes 5.92 seconds.
