Sandra Barwick (New Zealand) ran 1,000 miles in 12 days 14 hours 38 minutes 40 seconds during the Sri Chinmoy Ultimate Ultra race in New York City, USA, on 16–28 October 1991. Despite pulling a hamstring Barwick went on to complete the full 1,300-mile (2,092-kilometre) course, becoming the first woman ever to finish the race.
As of January 2015, the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) no longer classifies World Best Performances by surface, creating a single combined list of fastest times.
