The first gaming machine to have a modern cross-design directional pad was the 1982 Game & Watch conversion of the original Donkey Kong arcade game. Strangely, the later Game & Watch version of Donkey Kong Jr had a directional controller made up of four separate round buttons. The D-pad was the innovation that paved the way for portable, pocket-friendly handheld gaming, and its folding “clamshell” design proved both popular and influential.
