American businessman Dennis Tito (USA) was the first space tourist. Tito's trip to the International Space Station (ISS) lasted from 28 April to 6 May 2001.

Tito arrived aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, to the dismay of NASA, who initially objected to having a 'space tourist' aboard the internationally funded ISS. They relented after Tito signed agreements indemnifying NASA in the event of injury or death. He also agreed to pay for anything he broke aboard the station, and was not allowed to access American sections of the station unaccompanied.
