In a poll of 2.4 million Americans conducted by AOL and the Discovery Channel in 2005, 40th US President Ronald Reagan was voted the greatest American of all time. His two terms in office (1981–89) are associated with the end of the Cold War and economic prosperity, a period of much-needed stability following the Vietnam War.
