Less than 5% of all lightning strikes involve positive lightning, where the net transfer of charge from the cloud to the ground is positive, rather than the much more common negative. They originate in the higher levels of storms and are much longer than normal lightning strikes, resulting in a much stronger electrical field. Positive lightning strikes can strike at 300,000 amperes and a billion volts.
