The ornamental 13-tiered entrance tower, known as a Gopura or Gopuram, at the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple located at Srirangam, India, reaches at least 72 m (236 ft 2.64 in) high. Dedicated to Ranganatha, a reclining form of the Hindu deity Vishnu, the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple is over a thousand years old, although the Gopura itself was not finished until much more recently in 1987, under the guidance of the Ahobila Mutt religious institution. The Gopuram feature originates from the Dravidian architecture of South India, and forms a prominent feature of many late Hindu temples from this region, being decorated with Hindu mythological carvings.
Initial construction has now begun on a much taller Hindu temple – the 213-m (698-ft 9.81-in) Chandrodaya Mandir at Vrindavan, India. One feature of the design is a capsule elevator to access the upmost seventieth floor.
