The British de Havilland DH 106 Comet was the first production, commercial jet airliner and the first into commercial service, when Comet G-ALYP began scheduled services from London to Johannnesburg for the British Overseas Airways Corporation on 2 May 1952. It was also the first commercial jet airliner to crash. On 26 October 1952, a BOAC Comet departing from Rome Ciampino airport failed to get airborne and left the runway running into rough ground. Two passengers were injured and the aircraft, G-ALYZ, was broken beyond repair. The Comet’s first fatal accident happened in Karachi, Pakistan on 3 March 1953, when a Canadian Pacific Airlines Comet, CF-CUN, failed to take off, crashing into a drainage canal and colliding with an embankment. Five crew and six passengers were killed.
