The deepest stepwell is Chand Baori, situated in Rajasthan, India. Built in the 9th century, it is 30.5 metres (100 feet) deep and has 3,500 steps on 13 storeys. Stepwells are wells in which the water is reached via a set of steps. They may be covered and protected, and are often of architectural significance. They are mostly found in the west of India.
