The world's smallest orchid species is the jungermannia-like platystele (platystele jungermannioides) found in the lower cloud forest of Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama at an elevation of 200-1,000 m (656-3,280 ft). Growing around 6.3 mm (0.25 in) high and 20 mm (0.78 in) wide, it blooms in the spring with just two or three tiny flowers that are a mere 2.5 mm (0.09 in) wide.
