Around three million years ago, volcanic activity and sediment deposition closed the gap between North and South America creating a strip of land called the Isthmus of Panama. This narrow land barrier prevented circulation between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and forced the formation of the Gulf Stream, which increased the temperature of European winters by around 10 degrees celsius.
