With a surface area of around 59,947 square kilometres (23,146 square miles) according to data published in 2016, Lake Victoria (also known locally as Nam Lolwe, Nyanza, Nalubaale and Ukerewe) is the biggest lake in the world that lies within the tropics. Containing some 2,424 cubic kilometres (581.5 cubic miles) of water, it is ranked as the seventh largest freshwater lake in the world. It is also the main source of the River Nile.
