In October 2008 scientists announced they had discovered the first ecosystem on Earth which has only one species. Desulforudis audaxviator was found 2.8 km beneath the Earth’s surface in the Mponeng gold mine, South Africa. It exists in complete isolation from any other species in complete darkness and temperatures of 60° C.
