At the 2013 London Game Developer’s Conference, game producer Miles Jacobson of UK-based developer Sports Interactive revealed that his company's title Football Manager 2013 (Sports Interactive, 2012) had been illegally downloaded more than 10.1 million by people around the world.
Sim games might seem a niche genre, but they remain ever-popular with game pirates.
According to Sports Interactive, Football Manager 2013 was cracked by pirates on 12 May 2013, over six months after the game’s release. However some code in the cracked versions of the game enabled Sports Interactive to track the IP addresses of users the pirated game. This enabled the developer to determine that their game was most popular with pirates in China, where 3.2 million of the illegal downloads originated.
Sports Interactive also noted that one pirated copy of Football Manager 2013 had been found in the Vatican.
