The first open-world videogame was Elite (David Braben and Ian Bell, 1984). Players were space pilots who were free to travel anywhere in the galaxy, which formed the "open world" of the game, trading in goods from commodities to contraband. The aim was to attain the rank of Elite: how the player got there was up to them.
