Magnetars are a type of neutron star that possess stupendously powerful magnetic fields of up to 100 billion teslas. The Earth, for comparison, has a magnetic field of around 50 microteslas. Measuring around 20 km (12 miles) across, a magnetar should theoretically be able to strip the data from a credit card at a distance equivalent to half way to the Moon.
