Inland river deltas are places where rivers drain to basins where water evaporates or seeps into the ground, but doesn’t reach the sea. The largest delta contained within one country is the 40,000-square-kilometre (15,444-square-mile) Okavango Delta in Botswana, fed by river floodwaters from the Angolan highlands. About 14,000 square kilometres (5,405 square miles) of the delta is flooded at least once a decade, and 9,000 square kilometres (3,475 square miles) of which is classified as wetland.
The Okavango Delta supports a wide variety of fauna, including elephants, lions, crocodiles, water buffalo and hippos, as well as more than 400 bird and 70 fish species.
