A total of 1.3 million contestants took part in the World Cyber Games (WCG) Championships for 2006, a year-long series of offline and online events, which led to 700 players, representing 70 countries, advancing to the Grand Final in Monza, Italy on 18-22 October 2006. South Korea were the overall winners, with two gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal. The total prize money on offer at the World Cyber Games 2006 Championships was $462,000 (£235,937).
