The largest area of natural grasslands is the Great Plains of North America, which stretch along the USA for 3 million km² (1,158,300 miles²) from southern Canada to northern Mexico. The Great Plains are temperate, meaning they are found inland with warm, dry summers; the largest of the tropical grasslands (which grow nearer the coast, with higher rainfall and, often woodland occurring) are the savanna grasslands of northern Australia, measuring 1.2 million² (463,320 miles²).
The Great Plains are home to large herds of bison (buffalo), which once numbered 60 million, but which hunting had reduced to 2,000 by 1885. Since then, numbers have blossomed to 350,000 due to their protection in national parks and on cattle ranches.
