- Who
- North American silk moth caterpillar
- When
- 01 January 0001
The caterpillar of the North American silk moth (Antheraea polyphemus) eats more food relative to its own body weight than any other animal. Living on the leaves of oak, birch, willow, and maple, it eats up to 86,000 times its own weight during the first 56 days of its life. If a human baby weighing 3.2 kg (7 lb) were to equal this feat, it would need to consume 273 tons (601,861lb) of food during the same time period.
