The highest opening score recorded in a scrabble tournament is 126 points, for the word MuZJIKS (with a blank for the U). This was achieved by Jesse Inman at the National Scrabble Championships in Orlando, Florida, USA, on 26 July 2008. The word he played is an archaic transliteration of the Russian word for peasant and, if played with no blank pieces (which has never yet been done), the highest scoring word opening possible at 128 points.
The tournament was played using the Official Club and Tournament Word List (TWL) favoured by the North American Scrabble Players Association (NASPA). However, the MUZJIKS opening is also permissible under the Collins Standard Wordlist (CSW) favoured by the World English-language Scrabble Player's Association (WESPA).
