“Zombie PCs” are ordinary home computers that have become infected with viruses or worms in order for criminals to use thousands of them at once to attack websites. These attacks involve the home computers overwhelming a target website with data, causing that site to go offline, without the computer owners being aware of it. According to internet security firm CipherTrust, in 2005 the USA had more zombie PCs (personal computers) than any other country, with an estimated 964,020 infected computers available for criminals to use remotely.
