The best-selling single edition of a comic book is X-Men #1 (Marvel Comics, 1991) with sales of 8.1 million copies. It was created by Chris Claremont (UK) and Jim Lee (USA) who also drew four variant covers all of them published simultaneously with a cover date October 1991.
X-Men 1 was published during the comic books speculator boom of the 1990's. Jim Lee drew five covers. Designated 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, and 1E, the first four's cover images fit together to form a larger image, used again as the gate folded cover to 1E, released one month later. Jim lee did not act solely as the artist but also as co-creator of the story alongside Chris Claremont. X-Men 1 brought back the original team together to the X-Men.
Craig Glenday presented the Guinness World Records certificate to Chris Claremont and illustrator Jim Lee at Comic Con 2010, held in San Diego, USA, 22 to 25 July.
