The Race Across America is regarded as one of the world's toughest athletic events. Since the clock does not stop once it's started, riders are usually on their bikes for more than 20 hours per day. The riders are required to check in at a series of time points along the route but there are no formal 'stages' as in cycling events such as the Tour de France - they simply go or stop as they please until they reach the end of the route.
