The only species of fish that can sneeze is the hagfish or slime eel (Myxine glutinosa), a primitive species of jawless fish or agnathan related to lampreys, which lacks true fins or scales. It bores inside other fishes – living, dying, or dead – and eats their internal organs until they are literally hollow. It then slips out of the hole that it has bored, by secreting vast amounts of slime which lubricates its body so that it can readily ease its passage out of its prey’s empty carcase, and it prevents itself from suffocating in its own slime by sneezing it out of its primitive respiratory slits. It also secretes copious quantities of slime to ward off or entangle any would-be predator.
