Australian road trains, which consist of powerful semi-trucks pulling up to three trailers, are permitted by national legislation to be up to 53.5 m (175.5 ft) long and weigh up to 125.2 tonnes (276,000 lb), although some states set the limits lower. Such vehicles, which are the main form of freight transportation in the remote interior of the country, are only permitted to travel on designated routes.
