Alvaro de Marichalar (Spain) crossed the Atlantic on an aquabike (jetski) in 17 days 1 hr 11 min, departing from Hierro, Canary Islands, on 4 May and reaching English Harbour Town, Antigua, on 21 May 2002. He refueled and slept aboard a support vessel (a sailing catamaran), but whenever he was in contact with it, it was allowed to drift to ensure that his journey did not advance.
This was also the first documented crossing of the Atlantic by aquabike. The Atlantic was the longest open-ocean leg on a journey that took him from Rome to New York City. Due to the limited fuel range of his 950 cc Sea-Doo XP DI aquabike, such a crossing would not have been possible unsupported. Alvaro would race ahead of his supply boat, a sailing catamaran, then stop when his fuel ran low. Whilst waiting for the support vessel to catch up he would sleep and eat. Once a day he would board the catamaran to service his aquabike and catch up on sleep. He was on the move an average of 16 hours each day. Whenever he was in contact with it, the boat was left to drift in the current, ensuring that the journey was not advanced at all whilst he was on board. The total distance he covered was 3,672 nautical miles (6,800 km).
