An estimated global audience of 1.9 billion people in 150 countries watched the dual-venue Live Aid charity concerts on “the day the music changed the world”, 13 July 1985. Organized by musicians Bob Geldof (Ireland) and Midge Ure (UK), the event was broadcast simultaneously from Wembley Stadium, London, UK, and John F Kennedy Stadium, Philadelphia, USA, and featured many of the biggest names in rock including The Beach Boys, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins (who appeared at both venues), Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Queen, members of The Rolling Stones, Simple Minds and U2. The concerts raised approximately £40 million ($63 million; then $50 million) for famine relief in Ethiopia.
