In October 2012, Caterpillar unveiled its new Cat 6120B H FS – the largest hydraulic shovel excavator. With a bucket volume up to 65 cubic metres, it is able to load up a massive Caterpillar 797F 363-ton haul truck in as little as three passes. The 6120B is also the first hydraulic shovel to utilize "hybrid" technology – taking energy from the shovel’s swing as it decelerates and storing it in electrical devices called capacitors. This energy can then be re-used the next time the shovel moves, reducing fuel consumption. The Caterpillar 6120B H FS weighs 1,400 tons and is powered by a 4,500-horsepower engine.
