Smith swam a distance of c. 24 km (15 mi) from Cape Ngombo (Makanjila) to Senga Bay and was piloted by Walter Muggleton.

The first documented swim across Lake Malawi was completed in tandem by Lewis Pugh and Otto Thaning (both South Africa) on 5 January 1992. Their total swim time was 10 hours 5 minutes.
