Laughton (head of the UK's Penny Farthing Club) broke the record as part of the Penny Farthing Extravaganza Weekend over the course of which 12 records were set. GWR was ably assisted by professional timekeepers Daniel Tzabar, Robert Ruszkowski and Lieze Thielemans.
Laughton already holds penny-farthing records for: the fastest 10 km (no hands) – 23 minutes 23.74 seconds; the greatest distance in one hour (no hands) – 26 km (16.15 mi); and the fastest speed with no hands – 29.603 km/h (18.394 mph), all achieved at the Preston Park velodrome in Brighton, UK, as part of GWR Day on 14 November 2019.
The equivalent female record was also achieved on 11 October 2024: Evi Dumon (Belgium) completed 1 km no-handed in 2 minutes 11.998 seconds. Both record attempts had flying starts.
