During the record breaking 31-0 defeat by Australia of American Samoa in a World Cup qualifying match at Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia on 11 April 2001, Archie Thompson scored an international record 13 goals.

Preivously, the record number of goals scored by one player in an international match was ten by Sofus Nielsen (1888-1963) for Denmark v. France (17-1) in the 1908 Olympics and by Gottfried Fuchs (1889-1972) for Germany who beat Russia 16-0 in the 1912 Olympic tournament (consolation event) in Sweden.
