The Backstreet Boys' (USA) album Millennium, released in 1999, had sold 12.25 million copies in the USA alone by October 2014. The Grammy-nominated album was certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments of 13 million units on 7 February 2001.
Millennium entered the Billboard 200 albums chart at No.1 on 5 June 1999, selling 1,134,000 copies in the first week to shatter the previous SoundScan record (at that time) held by Garth Brooks for first-week sales. Billboard album records are based on Nielsen Soundscan figures, available only since 1991, when accurate tracking data was first introduced. Backstreet Boys' eponymously titled debut album has RIAA-certified shipments of 14 million units (as of 5 April 2001) but its actual sales are below those for Millennium. Millennium has reportedly sold 40 million copies worldwide.
