The longest videogame script is that of Baldur's Gate III, which reportedly stretches to more than 2 million words – greater than all the books in the Game of Thrones series. To be more exact, the script is 2,503,837 words in total, 2,121,425 of which are character dialogue, with the remaining 382,412 as non-dialogue game text (user interfaces, item descriptions, spells, tooltips and so on). The game, which was developed by Larian Studios (Belgium) and released on 3 August 2023, features over 500 voiced characters and a cast of more than 240 voice actors.

The extreme length of Baldur's Gate III's script is a consequence of the developer's commitment to giving the player almost complete freedom of choice – a trait inherited from the tabletop Dungeons & Dragons (TSR, 1974) games on which it is based (specifically, Baldur's Gate III is based on the 5th edition D&D rules). Any character – no matter how important – can be killed, destinies can be ignored and conflicts can be resolved in a huge number of ways. The player can even choose to acquire the ability to speak with animals, meaning that dialogue had to be written for not only the humanoid races, but also all the creatures that populate the world.
