Albert “Al” Schmitt (USA, 1930–2021) and Șerban Ghenea (Canada, b. Romania) have both won 20 Grammys for their work as recording engineers/mixers. Schmitt’s trophy haul, from 36 nominations, began in 1963 when he won Best Engineering Contribution – Other than Novelty and Other than Classical (now Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical) for his work on Henry Mancini’s soundtrack to the 1962 movie Hatari!. His last visit to the winners’ rostrum was at the 56th Grammys in 2014, taking Best Surround Sound Album for Paul McCartney’s Live Kisses (2012), for which he was credited as surround mix engineer. Ghenea’s 20 Grammy wins – from 45 nominations – include recognition for his work with the likes of Justin Timberlake (on Best Pop Vocal Album Justified in 2003 – Ghenea’s first Grammy), Kelly Clarkson and The Weeknd, and an unrivalled five Album of the Year wins with Taylor Swift (2016, 2021 and 2024), Adele (2017) and Bruno Mars (2018). He forced a tie with Schmitt when Swift’s Midnights won Album of the Year at the 66th Grammy Awards on 4 February 2024.

Ghenea landed seven nominations ahead of the 66th staging of the Grammys, broadcast live from the crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA. He has received at least one nomination at 12 consecutive Grammy Awards (55th–66th, 2013–24).
