The largest underground mine is El Teniente, located in O'Higgins Region, Chile. This copper mine, which is owned and operated by the Chilean national mining company Codelco, comprises some 3,000 km (1,864 mi) of drifts (horizontal passages cut to extract ore) and another 1,500 km (932 mi) of transportation tunnels.

El Teniente was discovered in the early 19th century and has been in operation since 1905.
