On 16 November 2000 European businessman, Norman Shelley, purchased a collection of 76 bottles of The Macallan malt whisky at the current value of £231,417.90 ($341,154). This collection included 76 rare malts, the oldest of which dated from 1856.
The whisky collection included a number of old, rare and unusual Macallan malts some dating from 1856, 1861, 1874, 1897, 1926, 1928 and 1940. A press release by Macallan revealed that the buyer intends to take some of the bottles back home to Turkey to celebrate the purchase, although many of the older bottles will be left at The Macallan visitor center on display for visitors. The Macallan single malt whisky has been distilled and matured on the Easter Elchies estate in Speyside, ever since the distillery was first officially licensed in 1824. The Macallan is matured in selected Spanish oak sherry casks for richness and depth of character.
