On 23 November 2021, Billboard magazine published an updated list of the best-performing artists on the Hot 100 singles chart from its launch on 4 August 1958. With 20 No.1 singles, 34 Top 10 hits and 71 entries in total to their credit, The Beatles were ranked at No.1. Madonna (USA, b. Madonna Ciccone) landed at No.2, with Elton John, Elvis Presley, Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Rihanna completing the Top 10.

Madonna’s Hot 100 history features 12 No.1 singles, 38 Top 10 hits and 58 charting songs in total (57 of which were achieved before the 6 November 2021 cut-off point for the “Greatest of All Time Hot 100 Artists” chart). Her biggest hits include “Like a Virgin” (6 weeks at No.1 in 1984-85), “Vogue” (3 weeks at No.1 in 1990), “Take a Bow” (7 weeks at No.1 in 1995) and “Music” (4 weeks at No.1 in 2000).

Billboard methodology: “Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No.1 earning the greatest value and weeks at lower spots earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, eras are weighted differently to account for chart turnover rates during various periods.”
